On a perfect Saturday morning I met Laura and Ken in Central park for their engagement session. From the moment I met them I knew we would have a great time. After a few minutes talking to them, they told me that they were completely game for anything I suggested. I really love and connect with couples who are down for anything I suggest, whether that is crossing the street in NYC holding each others hands, dancing with each other, picking each other up or tossing each other around.
I had so much fun during Laura and Ken’s session - these two are just so sweet and easy going. They’re cute, funny and they’re both people who make you feel like you’ve known them for years, even when you just meet them. It was such a pleasure spending time with these two and hearing all about the plans they’ve made for their wedding planning. we’re so excited to see all their planning come together and celebrate with their family and friends their Intimate Wedding.
Their dream place to get married is Queen of All Saints in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and have the reception at Maison May. But they’re not sure if or when Maison May will reopen, but both places are very special to them since they lived in the neighborhood. They celebrated their engagement at Maison May. They want to get married in Brooklyn because that was such a big part of their relationship. They lived in Brooklyn together for 5 years! I also love Brooklyn and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding.
Here is a sneak peek into their engagement photoshoot and details about their beautiful love story!
How They Met
“We found each other on OkCupid. I thought he was really cute, and I noticed that we liked the same music. And we both liked the best pizza topping - black olives!”
THEIR FIRST DATE
Laura: “Our first date went from about 2:00 PM to midnight. We walked from the Highline to Grand Central, in freezing December temperatures, and we still somehow lost track of time.”
Ken: “We went to Artichoke Pizza near the Highline. And literally I felt like it was love at first sight. Haha, I think our waiter was mad at us because we were there for about 4 hours and only shared 2 slices.”
WHEN THEY KNEW THEY HAD FOUND THE ONE
Laura: “I started looking at wedding dresses the second we said goodbye on our first date. It was so easy to talk to him from the beginning, even about super serious stuff that you normally wouldn't talk about on a first date. When you know, you just know.” Ken: “It was definitely on the first date. Laura is just so kind and amazing, and we have the same values and like the same things. And I think she is the most beautiful woman on the whole planet.” :)
THE PROPOSAL
Laura: “I saw it coming from a mile away but still ugly cried. We were going to recreate our first date at Artichoke on our one year anniversary, and it was completely FREEZING that night. Before we went outside, I asked V if he'd give me a hug for the road to keep me warm, and he ran into the bathroom. I knew something was up. I assumed he was hiding the ring somewhere I would have felt it.”
Ken: “I was planning on proposing on the Highline, but it was closed early because of winter hours. So we came all the way back to Brooklyn and walked around Pratt Institute's Sculpture Garden in the freezing cold. It was actually really cool because we were the only ones there.”
One thing they love about each other
Laura:“That's a hard one! It would be a combination of his optimism, how driven and talented he is, and how easy it is to just strike up a conversation about anything".”
Ken: “So many things! But the best is her personality...it's hard to articulate this without sounding corny, but I truly feel like she's my other half and completes me. Her humor and good nature, I can't imagine living without her.”
The upcoming wedding
Laura: “It's so hard to tell what that will be like because of the current restrictions due to COVID-19. At this point, all we know is that we want to incorporate our cats into it somehow, whether that's through signature drinks named after them or through cut outs of them in our pictures.”
Ken: “Haha, yeah, we were thinking about putting bow ties on our cats, but I don't think that's gonna work. I'm just looking forward to seeing her walk down the aisle in her dress.”
Favorite part of the session
Laura: “I loved that so many strangers kept congratulating us! But also, I loved getting to work with Monica because it gave me an idea of how our wedding photo session would be in the future.”
Ken: “It was great getting to experience Central Park so early and then getting to see the final product of the amazing pictures Monica took.”
Do you have any tips or advice for other couples
Laura: “BOOK MONICA - you will not regret it! :) I appreciated the instructions she gave us for poses because I'm just generally an awkward and disoriented mess. And get to wherever you want to shoot early, especially if it's a popular place. And just have fun with it!”
Ken: “The best advice I can give is to just do whatever your fiance tells you to do and look your best.”
